Skillet Black Pepper Chicken
A Keto Chicken Recipe If you’re new to making a keto chicken dish in a skillet, this will be a game changer.
No exaggeration! This black pepper chicken recipe is truly one of my keto chicken recipes. That rare combination of quick and easy, incredibly flavorful, but in no way a compromise of a great Asian chicken dish. Here’s why:
✅ The meat of this chicken (even the breast) is so spicy and moist you’d think it’s been marinated for hours;
✅ Ultra easy – Even if you cook it for a few minutes longer, it’s still tender. The magic of the marinade!
✅ It looks and tastes like a traditional stir-fried chicken – albeit (I’m not kidding) the sauce is more savory and thickened;
✅ Various serving options with exactly the same outcome. Serve with cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, lettuce wraps, or any keto side dish of your choice.
✅ It takes less than 10 minutes to prepare to get it in the skillet, and you can make the marinade and sauce ahead. Plus, the sauce is effortless – whisk together a few ingredients and pour over the chicken.
How To Make Black Pepper Chicken Recipe
This black pepper chicken starts with a soy sauce marinade made with 2 tbsp water, oyster sauce, and 1/2 tsp sesame oil.
For maximum tenderness, I marinate the chicken for 30 minutes. This is not hard to do – and doesn’t need to be “exact”!!!
Thinly slice the chicken, put it in a small bowl, pour the marinade over, and toss well to coat. It doesn’t need to be perfect. The marinade will penetrate and tenderize the chicken as it sits.
Whisk together the sauce ingredients in another small bowl, then heat up a large skillet over high heat. Add some oil and cook the chicken in a single layer for 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until golden and cooked through. Transfer the chicken to a plate and keep warm.
In the same skillet, add some more oil and stir-fry the garlic, scallion whites, onion, and bell pepper for about 1 minute or until crisp-tender.
Bring the chicken back to the skillet and pour the sauce over it. Season with salt and black pepper. Cook everything together for another minute or until the sauce is slightly thickened, tossing well to coat.
Sprinkle scallion greens on top and serve hot with cauliflower rice or any keto side dish of your choice!!!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is black pepper chicken?
Black pepper chicken is a Chinese stir-fry dish that features chicken, onion, bell pepper, garlic, and celery, all coated in a savory and spicy black pepper sauce.
How do you make the chicken tender and juicy?
The secret to making the chicken tender and juicy is to marinate it in a mixture of ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, black pepper, and baking soda for 30 minutes. The baking soda helps to tenderize the chicken by raising its pH level and breaking down the proteins. The soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and black pepper add flavor and moisture to the chicken.
Can I use chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts?
Yes, you can use chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts for this recipe. Chicken thighs are usually more moist and flavorful than chicken breasts, but they also have more fat and calories. You can cut the chicken thighs into thin slices and follow the same steps as for the chicken breasts.
What other vegetables can I use for this recipe?
You can use any vegetables you like or have on hand for this recipe. Some good options are baby corn, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, snow peas, or zucchini. You can also adjust the amount of vegetables according to your preference.
How do I make the sauce thicker or thinner?
The sauce for this recipe is made with soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and water. You can adjust the thickness of the sauce by adding more or less water. If you want a thicker sauce, you can also add some cornstarch or arrowroot powder dissolved in water to the sauce and cook until it thickens. If you want a thinner sauce, add more water or broth to the sauce and cook until it reaches your desired consistency.
